  1. Some LCD units are displays only, but now there are ones with HD receiver and/or analogue receivers built in. These also have various connectors on the back for the DVD, cable box, computer and so on. You select the one to watch using the remote, maybe though a menu.

  2. yes and hd is high definition that is at the highest side of video frequecy and even low frequencies are reproduces pretty well because video amplifier are meant to provide uniform gain over a band of frequencies from low to highest possible.
